Installing Styles in Adobe Photoshop Elements

by Brandy O’Neal – Mega-Doodle Inspired

This tutorial will enable you to install styles for use with Adobe Photoshop Elements.

To give you a summary, you will copy the .asl file you purchased/downloaded and place it in a folder on your computer.

INSTALLING .ASL FILES

Installing styles into Adobe Photoshop Elements is super easy.

1.       Close Adobe Photoshop Elements. It should not be open during this installation.

2.       Locate your new style file (.asl) and copy it. If you are using PSE 6, we’ll be back later to get the .xml file.

3.       In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory location listed below:

Photoshop Elements 5 Windows XP:
Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\layer styles\
1. Create a folder with the same name as the Style
2. Paste the .asl file into the folder

Photoshop Elements 5 Vista:
ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\layer styles\
1. Create a folder with the same name as the Style
2. Paste the .asl file into the folder

Photoshop Elements 6 Windows XP:
Documents and Settings\ All Users\ Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_us\Photo Creations\Layer Styles
- Paste the .asl file into the Layer Styles folder

Photoshop Elements 6 Vista:
ProgramData\ Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_us\Photo Creations\Layer Styles
- Paste the .asl file into the Layer Styles folder

Elements 4 and lower:
Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements X\Presets\Styles
where X is the version number for your version of Photoshop Elements.
- Paste the .asl file into the Layer Styles folder

NOTE: If you do not see the folders listed in the above directions, you’ll need to change a simple setting on your computer one time. Refer to the web site listed here for directions:

If you’re using PSE 5, you’re all done!!! PSE 6 users…continue on.

4.       Go back now and copy the .xml file that came with your purchase/download.

NOTE: If you are installing a style for PSE 6 that did not come with an xml file, refer to the website below for instructions on how to create one. If the link does not work, feel free to email me!  http://www.scrappersguide.com/video_tutorials/lindas_tip/install_layer_styles_pse6.html

5.       In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory location listed below:

Photoshop Elements 6 Windows XP:
Documents and Settings\ All Users\ Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_us\Photo Creations\Photo Creations Metadata\Layer Styles
- Paste the .xml file into the Layer Styles folder

Photoshop Elements 6 Vista:
ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_us\Photo Creations\Photo Creations Metadata\Layer Styles
- Paste the .xml file into the Layer Styles folder

6.       Go ahead and open PSE to see if your new style shows up in the drop down box. If it does not show up, close and reopen PSE a couple times.

7.       If it still doesn’t show up, delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file in the directory below and then restart PSE. When you restart PSE, you’ll get a message stating that PSE is rebuilding the database. This is normal.

Photoshop Elements 6 Windows XP:
Documents and Settings\ All Users\ Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_us\
- Delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file

Photoshop Elements 6 Vista:
ProgramData\ Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_us\
- Delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file

And that’s it! Not too tough, right?
